How to Style a Wall Mirror: 6 Tips to Brighten Any Room
Share
A well-placed mirror is one of the quickest ways to make a room feel lighter and more spacious, and to add a finishing touch above a console, sofa or fireplace. These six simple rules will help you choose and hang one with confidence.
1. Get the size right
When hanging a mirror above furniture, aim for it to be roughly two-thirds the width of the piece below. A mirror that is too small can look lost on a large wall, while one wider than the furniture can feel top-heavy.
2. Hang it at the right height
As a general guide, the centre of the mirror should sit around eye level, roughly 150cm from the floor. Above a table or sideboard, leave a gap of around 15 to 25cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame so the two feel connected.
3. Use it to bounce light
Placing a mirror on a wall that faces or sits beside a window reflects daylight back into the room, which is especially useful in darker hallways and north-facing rooms.
4. Think about what it reflects
Before you drill, hold the mirror up and look at what appears in it. A view of a window, plant or artwork looks great; a reflection of a cluttered corner or the back of a door does not.
5. Match the shape to the space
Round mirrors soften a room full of straight lines, such as square furniture and door frames. Rectangular mirrors suit hallways and tall walls. Statement shapes such as a starburst make a feature of an empty wall.
6. Choose a frame that ties the room together
Pick up a finish already in the room: black frames echo black light fittings and handles, gold warms up neutral schemes, and natural or woven frames suit relaxed, Scandi or boho interiors.
